Orlando on the Cheap
Looks like we just signed Orlando Hudson to a one year deal on the cheap. One big downside is sending a First Round pick the the D-Backs.
Not sure how I feel about this signing. I actually like Blake DeWitt and was looking forward to the story of him succeeding out of no where due to injuries last year. the sensible move might be to send him back over to third and put Casey Blake in Right. This move though does increase the depth chart at third, which seems like the best outlet for Russell Martin to get some rest, but still have his bat in the order.
The other obvious issue here is, how does this help us with power? We needed to sign Manny, Bobby Abreu or Adam Dunn to play left– not shuffle the outfiled around to put Blake out there. This just gets us a 30+ year old rented infielder with a less than .500 slugging percentage. How exactly does this solve the glaring hole in the Dodgers offense?
I think Mike Sciosia’s Tragic Illness has a good run down on all of this as well.
The Biggest Off Season Discussion…
I think in the minds of most Dodger fans the biggest issue all year has been the possible return of Manny Ramirez to Chavez Ravine. Unfortunately this desire to bring him back may have cost this team in 2009.
While I fully believe in the youth movement and the job Ned Colletti has done to preserve our core, we do not have a big bat. Manny obviously can provide that, but at what price and at what cost? And, where is our team without some type of power?
All off season I felt Adam Dunn was the better answer from a long term on the field perspective– and in the pocket book. At 30 he has several more productive National League years left than Ramirez. He also would cost the organization much less, something we need to be concern about as Russell, Kemp, Eithier, Loney and Billingsley go further into their arbitration years and march towards Free Agency. Dunn would not have brought the marketing opportunities to the team and I don’t see fake half-goutee’s selling like dreadlocks– but it makes more long term sense.
Even if Colletti and the Front Office feel Manny is the better answer we have waited so long that Dunn is now with the Nationals. Our leverage has disappeared. So, we need to either pay the piper his enormous contract or feel comfortable with Juan Pierre in Left.
